Walgreen's: advantages & disadvantages

I went to new Walgreen's on the corner of Aycock and Spring Garden, which is a pharmacy/convenience store/grocery store. It is in a great location right off campus; students are able to walk to this location because it is only minutes away from the middle campus. It is also walking distance for those who live right off campus like myself, I could easily walk there in five minutes from my apartment in University Village.

I believe that this Walgreen's has more advantages than disadvantages because of its convenient location. They get a lot of business from college students because it is basically on UNCG's campus. One disadvantage of this Walgreen's location is that CVS is right next to it, and CVS usually has lower prices than Walgreen's, so a lot of people would prefer CVS over Walgreen's because of their prices. One other disadvantage is their entrance, if you are driving down Spring Garden towards campus, you cannot turn into Walgreen's without waiting at a light and turning onto Aycock. Their parking is not an advantage or a disadvantage, it is just a parking lot. Overall, I think that this Walgreen's is at a good location.

Circuit City: why it failed

On November 10th, 2008, Circuit City went out of business, and there is no mystery why. According to Time Magazine, "you could blame it on the bad economy or decreased consumer spending — which played no small role" but the main reason why they went bankrupt was because of "good old-fashioned bad management." Another reason why they went out of business was because of their main competition, Best Buy. From my personal experience, it does not surprise me that Best Buy is still in business and Circuit City went out of business, because I like Best Buy better and I believe they have better customer service as well as better inventory.

According to a blog, these are the top 10 reasons why Circuit City would have, and did, go out of business:
"10. If it ain’t broke, fix it anyway. During the ’90s, Circuit City was doing great. The problem was, competition was coming and it was coming hard and nobody took Best Buy seriously. If you don’t crush the competition, don’t be surprised when they crush you.
9. In a competitive environment, don’t take your eye off the ball. DIVX and CarMax were major distractions and Circuit City suffered greatly as a result.
8. In 2003, Circuit City fired thousands of employees and ended commissions for sales people in favor of an hourly structure. In 2007, Circuit City fired 3,400 of those hourly workers for cheaper replacements. When you fire well-paid veteran employees to make room for less-experienced, lower paid workers, your customers will notice. And they won’t like it.
7. Location, location, location! B locations equal B customers, B sales, B results.
6. Don’t notice too late that people want to buy movies, games and music when buying the hardware to play them. Those low margin items helped create brand loyalty for Best Buy.
5. Old, outdated stores need to be remodeled or closed and new, bigger ones need to be opened in competitive markets.
4. Selection and availability of hot products is crucial. If you don’t have what I need, Best Buy, Target or Walmart will. And next time, I will probably go there first.
3. Give customers a “real” rewards program. Not just a come-on for a branded credit card.
2. The state of “customer service” in retail America is abysmal. You can tell very quickly when you walk into a store that the employees couldn’t care less. Circuit City’s reputation for customer service was far less than stellar.
1. Filing for bankruptcy 16 days before Black Friday is an extraordinary event that no consumer can ignore. With consumer confidence non-existent and retailers fighting for every sale, you may as well just shut the chain down now."

Target Audiences

One of the most important components of a retail store is their target audience, and every store has a certain one. For example, stores such as Abercrombie & Fitch, Hollister Co., and American Eagle Outfitters have a target audience of early teens to mid twenties. Stores such as Eddie Bauer and Ann Taylor have a target audience of middle age women, and also men in Eddie Bauer's case.

When I took the VALS survey, my results told me that I am a Experiencer/Striver. An experiencer first which dominates my approach to life, and a striver second which represents a particular emphasis I give to my dominant side. I do agree with the results because I am always looking for a new experience and I strive for achievement.

Favorite Retailer Information

Abercrombie & Fitch was established on June 4th, 1892 by David T. Abercrombie as Abercrombie Co. Abercrombie was later joined by Ezra Fitch in 1900 and the company officially became Abercrombie & Fitch Co. It was originally an outfitter of sporting and excursion goods and is now one of the most popular clothing stores among my generation. There are 353 Abercrombie & Fitch stores across the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. Today it is run by Michael S. Jeffries, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, who has held this position since the 1990s. Abercrombie & Fitch's official logo is the gray moose and their trademark to promote the brand is Casual Luxury. They are the first company to call their employees "models" instead of "brand reps," which gives them the right to hire based on looks.

My Favorite Retailer

My favorite retailer is Abercrombie & Fitch.

5 reasons why it's my favorite:
1) it's an easy store to shop at, everything is made to match everything so I don't have to think much about what I want to wear.
2) I work there so I get a discount.
3) they sell everything I like, jeans, hoodies, t shirts, wovens, shorts, etc.
4) everything I buy there goes with flip flops, which is my favorite type of shoe.
5) it fits me very well.
